Canyonlands National Park

A marvelous maze of canyons stretching across eastern Utah. Second only to the grand canyon, this massive expanse of cliffs was carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Three distinct districts (Island in the Sky, Needles, and the Maze) are comprised of spectacular rock formations sculpted by the force of wind and water.

El Malpais National Monument

A vast volcanic expanse covering the western New Mexican countryside. Thousands of years ago, as recently as three thousand years ago, lava poured out of a number of cinder cones south of Grants, New Mexico. The lava cooled into rough black basalt that remains a scar on the area. Whether you enjoy a relaxing scenic drive, a hike amongst ancient lava flows and cinder cones, or dark adventures through lengthy lava tubes there is something for you at El Malpais.

Valley of Fire State Park

Nevada’s first and largest state park is almost completely unknown outside of the state, but it deserves the recognition of a national park. This is one of the last truly hidden gems. This small state park is still relatively popular so finding parking spots requires patience, and taking a photo without a stranger in it can be a challenge, but this park is more than worth the short drive from Las Vegas. This is an absolute must do if you’re in/near Las Vegas. It is less than an hour outside of Las Vegas and full of incredible natural features. You can see a few sights in an afternoon or take the entire day. It is worth every minute you spend in the park. You would never imagine there were so many treasures within a state park.

Gateway Arch National Park

A monument to the western expansion of the United States. At 630ft tall, Gateway Arch is the tallest arch in the world, and the tallest manmade monument in the Western Hemisphere. Elevators inside the arch take visitors to the observation deck at the top, overlooking the city of St. Louis and the Mississippi River.
